We are seeking an experienced and safety-minded Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to run a Vermeer 24x40 drill for underground utility installation projects. The ideal candidate will have proven expertise in operating HDD equipment, strong knowledge of drilling practices and locates, and a valid Commercial Driverβs License (CDL) to transport equipment to and from job sites. This role requires technical skill, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to safe and efficient operations while working as part of a professional crew. What you'll do
- Equipment Operation
- Safely operate the Vermeer 24x40 directional drill and support equipment (mixing
- systems, vacuum excavators, trailers, etc.).
- Perform drill setup, bore planning, and execution of pilot bores, reaming, and product
- pullback.
- Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and bore path designs.
- Operate locating equipment and work closely with locator to maintain bore accuracy
- and avoid utilities.
- Transportation & CDL Duties
- Safely load, secure, and transport drill rig, mud mixing systems, and support equipment
- using CDL-qualified trucks and trailers.
- Ensure compliance with DOT regulations and maintain accurate logbooks.
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections on all vehicles and trailers.
- Maintenance & Safety
- Perform routine daily inspections, lubrication, and minor repairs on drilling equipment.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment.
- Follow company HSSE (Health, Safety, Security & Environment) policies and OSHA
- standards at all times.
- Identify and communicate potential hazards, utility conflicts, and project challenges.
- Team Collaboration
- Work closely with the drilling crew, locators, foremen, and project managers to achieve
- production goals.
- Train and mentor less experienced crew members when necessary.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, utility representatives, and clients as
- required.
What we're looking for
- Minimum 3β5 years of HDD operating experience, specifically with Vermeer or
- comparable equipment (24x40 or larger preferred).
- Valid CDL (Class A or B) with clean driving record.
- Strong understanding of underground utility installation (water, sewer, fiber, gas, or
- electrical).
- Proficient with locating systems (DigiTrak, Subsite, or equivalent).
- Knowledge of drilling fluids, soil conditions, and bore planning best practices.
- Ability to read construction drawings, as-builts, and utility locates.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot equipment.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions and travel as required.
- Strong safety record and commitment to jobsite safety.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Comfort working in trenches, confined spaces, and variable weather.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and operate controls for extended periods.
Nice to have
- Experience with pullback of large product (duct banks, multiple conduits).
- Experience operating support equipment (excavators, skid steers, mini-excavators).
- OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, or other safety certifications.
- Leadership ability to oversee a small HDD crew.
